Putnam County Sheriff's Office Warns Of New Law Enforcement Scam

Here we go again. Another scam has been making the rounds in the Putnam County area and the scammers are using law enforcement as their cover.

According to a statement from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, they have recently "received reports of scammers impersonating law enforcement and other government agencies in an attempt to steal money from resident."

The scammers are calling their victims claiming to be from the Putnam County Sheriff's Office or other government agencies like the U.S. Marshals Service.

They then "threaten legal action or arrest unless you immediately move money, purchase gift cards, or transfer funds to a “safe” account."

This is very obviously a scam, however, these scammers use fear and urgency to take advantage of their victims over the phone.

Putnam County Sheriff's Office Scam Safety Tips

With another scam involving law enforcement making the rounds, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office is sharing reminders to keep yourself and family members safe from scammers.

They explain that "The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office will never call you demanding money or instruct you to move funds to avoid arrest."

Additionally, they will never ask for payments using gift cards, crypto or wire transfers. The Putnam County Sheriff's Office writes:

If you receive a suspicious call, hang up immediately. If you’re unsure whether the call is legitimate, contact our office directly using a trusted phone number—not one provided by the caller.
