Less Parking For Now at the Walkway Over The Hudson
The amazing weather we are having this fall has many people still very active outside. Hudosn Valley trails are full every day with people taking in the sun and warmer temperatures while they last
One of the most popular places in the Hudson Valley to take a stroll or a bike ride is the Walkway Over The Hudson. It offers a flat, wide paved surface that makes it easy to navigate. The Walkway also links up with trails that spur off to area rail trails.
A Parking Lot is Closed at the Walkway over the Hudson
If you are a fan of using the Wlakway to take in some fresh air or exercise then you know that there are two entrances to this New York State park not including the elevator you can take from the Upper Landing Park on the Hudson River.
What you might not know is you may have to walk a little farther for the next year or so from your parking spot to get on the Walkway. The Walkway is closing a parking lot in Poughkeepsie.
Both sides of the Walkway offer plenty of parking, which I didn't know had become paid parking lots until recently. There is free parking but many lots you are required to pay. It is not a big fee, I paid 5:25 for 4 hours of parking. Unfortunately, that is the minimum so if you are heading to the Walkway for a short time and wish to save money you should find a free lot.
The Paved Parking Lot for The Walkway Over The Hudson in Poughkeepsie is Closed
Starting Friday, November 8th, and running most likely through January 2026 you will find the lot at 61 Parker Avenue closed. That right, one of the lots on the Walkway's East side will be closed for more than a year.
The reason for the closure is so that the New York State Office of Parks and Recreation and Historic Preservation can begin construction on the new maintenance building. You may recall the old one burned down in 2021.

So the official paved lot on Parker Avenue will be closed however several spots in the paved lot will remain open as handicap spots during the construction. A sign will guide people to find those available parking spaces.
Where Can You Park for Free at the Walkway Over The Hudson
If you are looking for alternate parking choices you will find many options. There is free parking near the Walkway on both the Poughkeepsie and Highland side. In Poughkeepsie, you will find free parking available at Pulaski Park (170 Washington Street, approximately 0.2 miles from the Washington Street Stairs). You can also park along Brookside Avenue between Washington Street and Garden Street.
