Wappingers Falls Adds 2 New Historical Markers

Town Supervisor of the Town of Wappinger Joseph Cavaccini shared some fun, historical news recently.

They recently unveiled two new historical markers that "commemorating Revolutionary War-era sites that played an important role" in the Wappinger community history.

The historical markers include the shipyard at Lower Wappinger Creek and the Colonial Mill. Cavaccini wrote on social media:

From preserving the stories of our past, to caring for the places we share, to standing together for those in need, this is what our community is all about.

Where are the Historical Markers in the Town of Wappinger?

The Wappinger Historical Society shared more details about the historical markers to their social media pages.

They explain that the Shipyard sign is located on Creek Road near the Town of Wappinger Boat & Kayak Launch. The historical society writes:

The shipyard was established by Nicholas Brower, and commissioned by George Washington during the Revolutionary War.

If you're looking for the Colonial Mill sign, it's on New Hackensack Road near St. Nicholas Road. The Wappinger Historical Society adds that the marker "recognizes the mill run by the Van Benschoten family, which provided much needed flour to the troops stationed in the Highlands during the War."

Have You Seen The Legends & Lore Markers of The Hudson Valley?

While a historical marker is cool and all, I love the local Legends & Lore markers through the William G. Pomeroy Foundation.

The William G. Pomeroy Foundations mission is "committed to supporting the celebration and preservation of community history, and working to improve the probability of finding appropriate donor matches or other life-saving treatments for blood cancer patients."

If you've never seen the Legends & Lore markers, they tell unique and spooky stories of local towns across the region.

My favorites include the Sugarloaf Mountain Witch, Abraham Lincoln's Ghost Train in Hyde Park, and of course the classic legend of the Headless Horseman in Sleepy Hollow.
