Been really looking forward to doing that", came the question in the Catskill Trail Conditions Facebook page. Many seasoned hikers were quick to answer the question about the Hudson Valley destination that is one of the most deadly waterfalls in the world.

"There are no laws or regulations against it if that it what you mean (at least to my knowledge), but there are signs everywhere telling you not to", answered one local outdoor enthusiast. "There are rescues/injuries or death there every year because people get themselves into a predicament they can't get themselves out of. It's not worth it", cautioned another. Deaths at Kaaterskill Falls in Hunter, NY
The short answer is yes. Even without the added dangers of snow and ice, there have been multiple deaths at the waterfall over the last 20 years and four fatalities between 2014 and 2016 alone. It seems like one factor, however, may be even more dangerous than bad trail conditions.

In the age of social media, many devoted content creators will go to nearly any length for the perfect picture, and that includes ignoring both written and common-sense safety guidelines. NYS DEC rangers share that at least the last four deaths at Kaaterskill Falls could be directly attributed to "taking or posing for photos".
