As New York State's largest fair continued its celebrations, a serious situation began to unfold on the surrounding grounds.
One of New York's greatest balancing acts is finding ways to responsibly live with the natural world that surrounds its towns, cities, and even state fairs. Luckily, professionals were nearby when the two worlds recently collided.
Unexpected Excitement at the New York State Fair
The New York State Fair is full of rides, food, and huge musical acts. As it turned out, it was also near a special species of bird that was in the middle of one of the most important developmental stages of their lives.
Fledgling Birds Rescued at the New York State Fair
"DEC Educator Betsy and Environmental Conservation Police Officers (ECOs) rescued two fledgling male American kestrels at The Great New York State Fair on Saturday afternoon", began a recent post from the NYS DEC (below).
"Excitement" of New York State Fair Left Young Birds Stranded
As the DEC shared, not one but two young kestrels were found stranded on the ground. Professionals deduced that the fledgling birds, who were attempting to learn how to fly, were not helped by their parents due to the "excitement and commotion" of the nearby fair.
About the American Kestrel in New York State
American kestrels are both the smallest and most common falcon in New York State, though their numbers are falling. Experts share that populations in the Hudson Valley are particularly worrisome and have seen some of the sharpest declines.
