Kia has announced a nationwide recall affecting nearly 400-thousand Kia SUVs for issues with the transmission which can shift out of the "park" position on it's own.

According to ABC News the filing says if excessive force is applied to the gear shift lever, the brake-shift interlock mechanism may chip or crack. If that happens, the transmission can shift out of the park position on its own without the brakes being applied.

The Korean car manufacturing decided to enact the recall after 54 warranty claims were made. In total 377,000 of its Sorento crossover SUVs model years 2011-2013 are affected.

Kia will replace the brake-shift interlock at no cost to owners who will be notified sometime in November.
