The Killers Tease Funky New Record in Video
We've known that the Killers have been planning a new record for a while, but now we've got a slight taste of where they're going this time around. Today, they released a short video that includes some of the new music.
The Las Vegas-based band posted it to their social media feeds this morning in order to promote their concert in London's Hyde Park on July 8. It features a blast of '70s-inspired funk underscoring shots of the band working in the studio interspersed with them standing outside with a stereotypically Vegas-in-the-'70s trio: an elaborately dressed showgirl, a lounge singer and an Elvis Presley impersonator -- the last two of whom are engaged in a karate fight.
"Hello London, from Vegas, we are the Killers," she says in the clip below. "We're playing Hyde Park July 8th. Come and see us." The band included a link to where fans can get ticket information.
The Killers have been working on the follow-up to 2012's Battle Born since September, recording in Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles and Joshua Tree. Jacknife Lee, who has worked with U2, Green Day, R.E.M. and numerous indie bands, is said to be producing. Earlier this month, singer Brandon Flowers said that there are "moments that feel heavier than anything we’ve ever done, not that we’re the heaviest band in the world, but they have a finesse because of our experience. There’s also really beautiful things. Lyrically, it’s really close to home.”
Flowers also provided a handful of titles that might make the final cut, including "Rut" and "Run for Cover," which was recorded for Day & Age, but unreleased. A third song is "Tyson vs. Douglas," about the 1990 boxing match where Tyson, the undefeated and seemingly unstoppable heavyweight champion lost to James "Buster" Douglas, via 10th round knockout, the first time in Tyson's career that he had ever been knocked down. Shortly thereafter, Tyson was arrested and convicted on rape charges, serving nearly three years in prison. His attempt to revive his career essentially ended in 1997, when he was disqualified for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.
"I don’t know why but I think about it all the time and I finally tried to tackle it in a song," Flowers continued, "what it meant to have this hero of mine get torn down, and then everything that happened after that.”
