The Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office Drug Task Force continues its efforts to combat the distribution of narcotics and dangerous drugs in the City of Poughkeepsie. Following a series of raids and arrests on Main Street on October 3, 2024, investigators received tips that led them to a drug dealer operating behind buildings near 453 and 458 Main Street.

Arrest of Leonardo De La Cruz

After further investigation, agents identified the suspect as 25-year-old Leonardo De La Cruz. On October 7, 2024, the Drug Task Force successfully apprehended De La Cruz in the same area, where he was found in possession of a significant amount of fentanyl and crack cocaine, both of which are highly dangerous and linked to recent overdose incidents in Dutchess County, including a string of overdoses on Main Street just days earlier, on October 4.

Fentanyl and cocaine are the primary substances responsible for the majority of overdose deaths in the county, underscoring the urgent need for continued law enforcement action.

Charges and Bail

De La Cruz was arrested and charged with multiple felony offenses, including:

  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd Degree with Intent to Sell (Class B Felony)
  • Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th Degree (Class D Felony)

He was later arraigned in the City of Poughkeepsie Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail on bail set at $75,000 cash, $150,000 secured bond, or $250,000 partially secured bond.

Ongoing Efforts to Combat Drug Trafficking

The Drug Task Force is actively pursuing individuals responsible for trafficking drugs in Dutchess County. Law enforcement urges the public to report any suspicious activity or known drug dealers. Community members with information can contact the Drug Task Force’s confidential tip line at 845-463-6040 or email DrugTaskForceTips@gmail.com.

As with all criminal cases, De La Cruz is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
