Thanks to an application being submitted by a group of local high school students, a local World Series champ will now have a place in local history marked for him.
Eddie Collins: Millerton, New York Six Time World Series Champ
When you think of great New York baseball players there are probably a few that come to mind: Ruth, DiMaggio, Berra, Mantel, Jeter, Rivera just to name a few.
But when you think of New York and baseball, do you think of Eddie Collins? You probably should.
Collins was born in Millerton, New York and the story behind his birth is pretty wild. The William G. Pomory Foundation found that Eddie's mother, Mary Trowbridge Collins, traveled to what is now the Millerton Inn to visit her parents and while there gave birth to the future baseball star.
Collins is regarded as one of the greatest second basemen in MLB history. The William G. Pomory Foundation writes:
A storied base stealer and a member of the 3,000-hit club with six world titles to his name, Collins has secured himself a spot in sports history.
Collins played from 1906 to 1930 for the Philadelphia Athletics and Chicago White Sox.
High School Students Help Eddie Collins Get Historical Marker in the Hudson Valley
The Arlington Central School District recently shared that a few of their students made it their mission to get Collins his own historical marker.
They write on Facebook "This historical marker commemorating the Millerton hometown hero came about thanks to an application submitted by students of the nearby Arlington Highschool."
It turned out filling out the information to get the marker became a learning experience led by Arlington teacher Robert McHugh. The Facebook post goes on to add:
The students gathered primary sources and successfully submitted a grant through the Pomeroy Foundation, securing funding for the historical marker now in place at the Millerton Inn remembering the community’s connection to the revered player."
Evan Pagett, Joe Natalizio, Manav Patel, Aayin Munir and Tim McCormack all took played a part in getting Eddie Collins his new Historical Marker in Dutchess County.
Where is Eddie Collins Historical Marker Located?
The new historical marker can be found at 51 Main St, Millerton, NY right in front of the Millerton Inn.
Biographer Rick Huhn tells the WGP Foundation that Collins grandparents most likely ran the Millerton Inn in 1887 at the time of his birth, which makes the marker location perfectly fitting.
