The Most Popular Driving Infractions in the Hudson Valley
New York State Police recently wrapped up Speed Week, a seven-day initiative meant to curb the state's most popular driving infraction. When the results were tallied, however, there were a few more violations to add to the list.
While Speed Week is an annual occurrence, it doesn't seem that many Hudson Valley drivers are slowing down. With thousands of tickets issued over the special week, there will be many residents making a trip to their local courthouse very soon.

First, the obvious: Speed Week was about catching speeders, and that's exactly what happened. Between Troop F and Troop K, which cover the Hudson Valley on both sides of the Hudson River, nearly 7,000 tickets were issued including 4,197 speeding tickets. But what about other offenses?

Troop K, which serves Columbia, Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester Counties, shared a rough breakdown of tickets issued during Speed Week. After speeding (3,001 tickets issued), and the "other" category (999 tickets), the second-most popular ticket was for ignoring New York's "Move Over" law (below).
Move Over Law in New York State
New York's Move Over law was first enacted in 2010, and requires drivers to literally move over for emergency vehicles pulled over on the side of the road. In 2025, the law looks a little different:
It is New York State law that all drivers take precautions, including slowing down and moving over, to avoid a crash with any vehicle stopped along the roadway. The law has been expanded several times to also cover hazard vehicles, highway worker vehicles, and tow trucks. In 2023, the law was expanded again to cover all vehicles stopped on the roadway.
While all ticket totals pale in comparison with speeding infractions, other popular offenses during Speed Week included using cell phones while operating a vehicle, and improper restraints/use of seatbelt. There's also another violation police are targeting.

Recently, state police have also been targeting vehicles with missing, obstructed, or fake license plates, and issued more than 3,000 tickets during "Operation Plate Check". Learn the hidden images on New York's latest license plate here.
