POUGHKEEPSIE- Federal, state, and local law enforcement are investigating a troubling incident involving a padded envelope containing methamphetamine that was sent to the Dutchess County Board of Elections. The package was shipped via UPS from Greece and had traveled through several countries, including France, before reaching its destination.
Law Enforcement Response
Republican Elections Commissioner Erik Haight confirmed that the FBI is involved in the investigation, working alongside the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office and State Police. The Dutchess County Hazmat team was also called in to assist with the investigation, leading to a three-hour closure of the office as authorities conducted a thorough search of the premises.
Methamphetamine Concerns in the Hudson Valley
Methamphetamine use has been a growing concern in the Hudson Valley, with local law enforcement reporting a significant uptick in meth-related arrests over the past few years. In Dutchess County alone, authorities have seized over 50 pounds of meth in recent years, highlighting the severity of the issue and the importance of swift action in cases like this.
