National Pizza Day is Thursday, February 9, 2017 and this got me to thinking about what the best pizza toppings are. Of course, this topic becomes one that could start a few wars, because people love the toppings that they love and seldom do they want to try anything different.

But here is a question for you, if your town was a pizza what would it be? Here are a few thoughts:

  • Hyde Park. Plain cheese pizza, because no one wants to make way for having any 'new toppings' come into town.
  • Rhinebeck. Rhinebeck is a special little town that probably takes itself way to seriously, so how about 'Broccoli Rabe with Duck Sausage?' Sounds like Rhinebeck to me.
  • New Paltz. Ever so laid back, but more health conscious. New Paltz is where you might find a cauliflower crust on the menu on a regular basis. Let's top this one with an organic San Marzano tomato sauce and tofu cheese.
  • Beacon. Ah, well, Beacon has been on the forefront of the farm to table movement and it sees a great deal of traffic from NYC. In fact last week, I heard it called Brooklyn up the Hudson. Beacon pizza toppings could resemble a Bahn Mi sandwich. Roasted pork with pate, pickled carrots, jalapeno and cilantro.
  • Middletown. Toppings for a pizza describing Middletown, these would be your traditional toppings, pepperoni, meatball, sausage.
  • Warwick. If Warwick were a pizza topping, I think they would reflect the rich farming heritage of the area. Do you think that pulled pork with caramelized onions and apples with fresh field greens (or arugula) with a drizzle of something across the top, sounds like something you might get in Warwick?

What pizza toppings do you think reflect the town that you live in? Let us know, Brandi@WRRV.com.
