Netflix’s “The God of The Woods” May Be Filming in the Hudson Valley

New Netflix Series Based off of Popular Book in the Works

In April of 2026, Netflix announced a new series in the works called "The God of The Woods."

It's based off the wildly popular book of the same name, from author Liz Moore, that follows the story of 12-year-old Barbara Van Laar, who has gone missing while at summer camp in 1975.

According to a description of the book, Barbra is not just any camper. She's the daughter of the family that own the summer camp.

The book goes on to uncover secrets about the Van Laar family as the drama unfolds. Netflix has announced that Stranger Things actress Maya Hawke will star in the series as Judy Luptack, "the first female investigator in the male dominated Bureau of Criminal Investigation, who's looking into the disappearance" of Van Laar.

Kerry Condon will step up to play Alice Van Laar, Barbra's mother. There's no premier date just yet, but we'll make sure to keep this story updated as more details are released.

Is The God of The Woods Filming in the Hudson Valley?

There have been several books turned into movies and tv shows over the last few years. Will the tv series The God of The Woods stay true to the book?

The book takes place at a summer camp located in the Adirondacks. So, in our neck of the woods. Does this mean the series will film in the area?

We're starting to hear whispers that that is indeed the case.

Many sites are speculating that filming will begin in June of 2026 in and around New York State.

However, there are signs that it will be filming in the Hudson Valley.

Netflix Show Casting in Orange County, New York

The Newburgh Free Library shared a casting call for young aspiring actors in the area.

We followed the link to Roman Candle Casting and saw that they were casting for a project called "The Woods."

In the casting call post, it explains they are looking for kids ages 8-16 for "summer camp scenes for a new 1970s thriller" which sounds a lot like the set up for The God of The Woods (and The Woods is part of the casting call description).

Shooting locations include, according to the casting call, Newburgh (and surrounding towns), Tuxedo Park, Harriman State Park and Forestburgh.
