A Brand New Traffic Light Color is Coming to New York

Things are about to look much different at select New York intersections.

Traffic signals have been in use in the United States for over 100 years, but for decades, the design has remained unchanged. Now, new technology will add something extra.

New Traffic Signal Coming to New York

The addition and removal of local traffic signals has also been a sore subject for many New York residents. That uproar, however, is nothing compared to the feedback after one New York Department of Transportation recently announced a different type of change.

Queue Jumps Coming to New York City

"We’re installing 25 new queue jumps each year in NYC to give MTA buses a head-start to bypass traffic and speed up service", the New York City Department of transportation (NYC DOT) shared on social media. But what exactly is a "queue-jump" light?

What Are "Queue Jump" Lights?

As the NYC DOT explains in the video below, the new addition to traffic signals will include a new stripe to specifically give the "green light" to city buses to begin moving before other traffic.

Why Are New Yorkers So Against Queue Jump Lights?

Perhaps because it's New York City, or perhaps simply because change is hard, there were nearly zero positive responses to the announcement. Between questioning the light's safety, design, and even legality, it seemed that most drivers were not looking forward to the new additions.
