New York Honors Fallen Firefighters

The honors took place on Tuesday at the New York State Firefighter Memorial.

According to WTEN, twenty eight lives were honored by being added to the state’s memorial wall which is located on the northeast side of the Empire State Plaza in Albany, New York.

Twenty of the names added to the wall this year were names of firefighters who died due to health complications related to the 9/11 attacks, including Michael O’Hanlon, who passed away from cancer linked to being a first responder on 9/11. His wife Margaret told WTEN that “I did ask him if he could do it again and he said he would do it all over again. He lived a good life. He did 30 years in FDNY. He considered that the greatest job on the earth. It’s a family that’s always with you. The courage, the dedication, the pride in their job. It’s amazing actually.”

Michael was one of the 28 names added to the state’s memorial wall, with the names being honored and remembered for their courage and their sacrifice.

NYS Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services Commissioner Roger Parrino Sr. said that, “Let today’s memorial and this wall be a reminder that we all are forever in your loved one’s debt.”

Once Tuesdays ceremony concluded, there are now 2,552 names on the memorial wall.
