Scary: New York State Trooper Hit During Traffic Stop

A New York State Trooper is recovering after being struck by a vehicle during a traffic stop over the weekend.

Despite information campaigns and even changes to state laws, the sides of New York highways are unfortunately still a very unsafe place to be. Recently, a highway worked escaped a catastrophic accident by mere inches in Broome County, NY (below).

New York State Trooper Reportedly Struck by Vehicle

While the vehicle damage to the New York State Trooper's vehicle wasn't as extreme as the example above, the trooper is still lucky to be alive after reportedly being hit by a passing vehicle as they were returning to their cruiser (below).

"Move Over Law" Incident on Long Island, NY

"On Saturday, November 9, a New York State Trooper was injured when his patrol vehicle was struck on the Southern State Parkway in the town of Hempstead", reported the New York State Police (NYSP). Photos showed how dangerous the situation actually was.

What Is New York State's "Move Over Law"?

Many comments were quick to point out the driver's failure to follow New York's "Move Over Law". The law, which requires motorists to slow down and move over for emergency vehicles, was expanded to include all vehicles in 2023:

Drivers [must] exercise due care to avoid all vehicles stopped on the roadway, including by changing lanes. The Move Over Law applies to both sides of the roadway, not just the shoulder on the right.

While the trooper was transported to Nassau University Medical Center for reported pain, they were thankfully released without any serious injuries. New York State reports that roughly 300 New York residents are killed every year in roadside vehicle incidents.
