On the eve of the 18th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, a New York firefighter was mourned after his remains were identified.

On Tuesday, family and friends attended a memorial service for firefighter Michael Haub at the Krauss Funeral Home in Franklin Square.

Haub, a firefighter from Long Island, was killed during the  Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the age of 34 while working for Ladder Co. 4 in midtown Manhattan.

"Nearly eighteen years to the day after terrorists took his life, Firefighter Haub will be remembered by his loved ones and fellow firefighters," FDNY-Uniformed Firefighters Association President Gerard Fitzgerald said in a statement Tuesday, according to NBC. Fitzgerald called Haub a "hero."

Last week, a medical examiner identified more of his remains that were recovered at ground zero. Some of his remains were first found in the lobby of the south tower six months after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

"Haub’s Family was recently notified by the ME’s office nearly 18 years later confirming identification of some of his remains. It’s a harsh reminder to the family of the great loss that they and the Department have sustained," FDNY Family Assistance Unit said.
