New York State Troopers are seeing a shortage of new recruits according to the New York Post.

The New York Post is reporting that "The Division of New York State Police is losing more officers than it can keep as its ranks retire and fewer new troopers are brought on." New York State Troopers Police Benevolent Association President, and 25 year veteran of the force, Tom Mungeer told the NYP "We’re right at the precipice, staring into the abyss of a severe manpower shortage. I think it’s a public-safety concern for the entire state.”

From 2017 to 2018 501 Troopers retired, however only 365 were hired in their place.

Mungeer says "If we hire 500 troopers next year, I think we should be all right. If we don’t, I think we’re headed to a place that’s gonna take us years to dig out." The Post is reporting that New York State is planning on hiring 250 more Troopers in January.

In 2016 414 Troopers were hired, but officials said that at least 200 of them joined a Troop NYC task force created by Governor Andrew Cuomo part for counterterrorism efforts.
