It may seem like a weird time to be talking about turtle rescues in the Hudson Valley, but at the end of last week, a turtle was rescued by the Orange County Executive. Orange County Steve Neuhaus shared that he helped rescue a snapping turtle from the road on his way to work.

Orange County Executive Helps Turtle Cross The Road

Orange County Executive Neuhaus put up a video that clearly shows he has done this before. Rescuing a turtle from the road is one thing, but a snapping turtle takes on a whole list of challenges that you really should know before you attempt it. County Executive Neuhaus seemed to understand just how it should be done.

It was a group effort, as you can see from the video, and I am hoping that the turtle was actually headed in that direction. Turtle's direction of travel is part one of saving any turtle on the road. It is important that you help go in the direction they were traveling; otherwise, they just end up back on the road.

The Proper Way to Move A Snapping Turtle Out of the Road

I am assuming that if Executive Neuhaus had this much knowledge about how to move a turtle, he is also aware of the direction issue. So, what is the best way to move a snapping turtle?

We are quickly coming to the time of year when we will see fewer turtles. As the weather gets colder, they will head into the mud to keep warm for the winter. The technical term is they go into Brumation. It is similar to hibernation, but for Turtles.
