An alleged drunk Hudson Valley man is accused of fleeing police at speeds over 100 MPH and driving into a pond.

On February 23 around 1:15 a.m., a member of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office noticed a car driving allegedly at a high-speed heading north on Route 22 in Southeast.

The car nearly caused an accident as it sped through a red light at the Route 312 intersection, police say.

The driver is accused of fleeing at speeds over 100 MPH after the deputy activated his emergency lights in an attempt to pull the car over.

The deputy lost sight of the car at the intersection of Route 22 and Doansburg Road and began to canvass the area.

The officer then noticed a damaged guard-rail and the car floating in a pond on the other side of the guardrail, police say.

The vehicle sped away, failed to navigate a turn, crashed through a guardrail, went airborne, landed in the middle of the pond and became submerged, according to the DEC.

The driver, 32-year-old Mercer B. Given of Brewster, swam through the icy water and was arrested when he got to shore, officials say. He was also taken to the hospital. His injuries, if any, weren't released.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Given was driving in an intoxicated state.

Given was charged with reckless endangerment, a felony, driving while intoxicated and several traffic violations.

Brewster Fire Department members and the Mahopac Falls Dive Team assisted with removing the car from the pond.
