Police: 3 Rescued After Drunk Man Sinks Boat in Lake Mahopac

Three people had to be rescued in the Hudson Valley after a drunk man allegedly sank his boat.

Sergeant Michael Szabo, of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, was on marine patrol duty on Lake Mahopac when he was dispatched to reports of a sinking boat.

When he arrived, he noticed several jet-ski operators in the process of saving three passengers from the water after the boat they were on sank to the bottom of the water.

After safely arriving on shore, 25-year-old Michael E. Ahearn of Yorktown allegedly told the officer he was the driver of the boat and had been drinking prior to the boat sinking.

Ahearn then failed a series of field sobriety tests, police say. He was charged with operating a vessel while ability impaired by alcohol, a misdemeanor.

If found guilty of the charge, Ahearn could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00.
