An upper Hudson Valley man was arrested after police accused him of stealing over $40,000 in bail return money.

New York State Police at Catskill charged 31-year-old William M. Royal, of Coxsackie with 2 counts of 3rd-degree grand larceny, a class D felony and 1st-degree offering a false instrument for filing, a class E felony.

Royal allegedly illegally obtained $15,000 in cash in the form of bail return money from the Town of New Baltimore Town Court and $24,250 in bail return money from the Greene County Court, police say.

Royal was arraigned in the Town of New Baltimore Town Court and remanded to the Greene County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail or $30,000 secured bond. He is due to re-appear in the Town of New Baltimore Town Court April 26.
