Dutchess County Offers Proper Disposal for Worn American Flags

Have an Old American Flag? Here's What to do With It

As we head into July and America's big 250th celebration, many are putting out their American Flags to show their patriotism.

If you happen to be replacing an old one, there is a specific way that you should dispose of it.

Dutchess County Executive Sue Serino took to social media to share that you can drop off your worn flags at her office.

Serino writes:

We want to make sure every flag is treated with the dignity it deserves, so my office is here to help!

 

Worn flags can be dropped off at the Dutchess County Executive Office at 22 Market Street in Poughkeepsie on the 6th floor.

How To Properly Dispose of a Worn American Flag

There are several way to properly dispose of a worn American Flag.

One doesn't simply just toss the flag in the garbage, as that is considered disrespectful. According to the U.S. Department of War local municipalities, like the one mentioned above, will have a place to drop off a flag.

From there, once those boxes are fully, organizations like the American Legion, local VFW's, and Girl Scout and Boy Scout troops will collect the flags and hold a Flag Retirement Ceremony.

At these ceremonies the flags a burned. The U.S. Department of War explains that a resolution was passed in 1937 that this is an approved method. The resolution states:

 "The approved method of disposing of unserviceable flags has long been that they be destroyed by burning.
