A recent arrest report in Ulster County has some residents wondering if police are wasting their resources.

Law enforcement is not an easy profession, and between drug arrest task forces and tracking murder suspects, their plates seem to be very full. So why did they arrest a Hudson Valley man for what might be the least-dangerous crime of all time?

Arrest for Public Lewdness in Ulster County, NY

To be fair, the Ulster County Sherriff's Office were scant on details, and perhaps the "lewd" behavior in question was far more nefarious than it seems. If it was nothing more than what they reported however, then this might be the silliest arrest of the century.

Kerhonkson, NY Man Arrested for "Lewd" Act

"Deputies report the arrest of a 59 year-old male of Kerhonkson for public lewdness", began the report from the Sheriff's Office (below). The crime itself sounds like something out of a teenage coming-of-age movie rather than a criminal act.

Mooning Is a Crime in the Hudson Valley

The alleged criminal, the Sherriff's Office said, "intentionally exposed his buttocks to two adult victims" and was charged with public lewdness. Someone showed their butt to two other adults? Excuse me if I don't clutch my pearls.

The Hudson Valley Responds to Mooning "Crime"

"I don't know what's more pathetic, the 59 year old with nothing better to do or the 2 adults that were offended because they got mooned", bemoaned one Ulster County resident. "Omg two people got mooned what a joke", said another.

With no frontal nudity involved and no children in the area, did police really need to be called, and did charges actually need to have been pressed? It feels like there must be more to this story than in being shared.

If there is currently a nationwide campaign to "free the nipple", then a 59-year-old butt could surely be overlooked by an already-busy police department. If there is more to the story, then the mooning victims have my sincere apologies. If there's not, then consider me ready to show up at this man's trial with a bare butt.
