Temperatures across New York State are absolutely frigid, and while there are struggles that come with colder weather, it can also bring some pretty fascinating weather phenomena.

It's been in the single-digits in the Hudson Valley since Monday, which means that not only are some local pipes freezing, but some lakes as well. Have you heard of "pancake ice"?

"Pancake Ice" is a rare phenomenon that is more common further north. Colder temperatures in the Hudson Valley, however, might mean residents can see it closer to home (Great Falls Park via Facebook)

Is "Pancake Ice" Coming to New York State?

Pancake ice is aptly named for its shape, which resembles one of America's favorite breakfast foods. While the special ice is more likely found much further north, parts of the United States have seen plenty of examples this week. Here's how it happens:

How Pancake Ice Is Formed

As Great Falls Park explained on Facebook (below), the round ice discs are formed by swirling slush. Surprisingly, ice pancakes are only the tip of the iceberg (pun intended) for strange frozen shapes.

"Ice Balls" Floating in Michigan

In Michigan, residents recently were treated to "ice balls" (below). Similar to the ice pancakes, these balls are formed by the movement of the water to create a one-of-a-kind spectacle.

Kayakers Rescued from Ice in the Hudson Valley

Recently, ice became a problem for local Kayakers in Highland, NY. After changing tides of the Hudson River stranded several adventure-seekers, an emergency rescue was required to get the boaters to safety.
