It was just recently announced that a Hudson Valley figure skater will be representing Team USA at the 2025 Special Olympics World Games in Italy!

2024 Is The Year of the McCann Ice Arena

2024 has been a very good year for the McCann Ice Arena. Earlier this year, the Hudson Valley's latest semi-pro hockey team, The Hudson Valley Vipers, won their league championship. The Hudson Valley Vipers call the McCann Ice Arena home, and their championship win is made even more impressive knowing that the 2023-2024 season was their first year in existence! Shortly after the Vipers' win, it was announced that the club would be expanding with the addition of the Hudson Valley Venom. Now, it was announced this week that one of their skaters in their figure skating program will be competing for Team USA at the 2025 Special Olympics World Games in Italy!

Hudson Valley Figure Skater Ryan Chin to Compete for Team USA

Ryan Chin, one of the Hudson Valley's very own McCann figure skaters will be competing for Team USA at the 2025 Special Olympics World Games in Italy! The 23-year-old has been figure skating for about 11 years.
Ryan Chin of Wappingers Falls, New York, has competed in Special Olympics figure skating for seven years. As an athlete, Ryan has made great progress in achieving higher skill levels and in advocating for individuals with disabilities. Outside of skating, Chin is a talented swimmer and enjoys hiking segments of the Hudson River Valley Greenway System and the Appalachian Trail. In the kitchen, Ryan attempts to duplicate his favorite menu items from Olive Garden. His specialties include breadsticks, stromboli and pizza. Anticipating his upcoming adventure in Italy, he looks forward to trying authentic Italian food from its source.

Ryan started his skating career in the therapeutic skating program offered by McCann Ice Arena and started by Laurie May. It was only when the Special Olympics New York Winter Games was held in Poughkeepsie, prior to COVID, that his coaches realized that Ryan could compete and he has participated in the Special Olympics New York Winter Games for the past six years. With hard work, perseverance, luck, and support from a dedicated group of coaches, Ryan has been able to accomplish what others considered impossible.

In preparation to the World Games, Ryan said "Competing in World Games means everything to me. I can't wait to bring home the gold for Team USA!" Ryan will be joining 1,500 athletes, 621 coaches, 2,000 volunteers, and more than 100,000 spectators in Turin from March 8-16, 2025. Ryan is just one of three skaters from NY who will be in attendance.

On Facebook, the McCann Ice Arena wrote, "We are so proud of you Ryan, we will always be cheering you on!" Now, training and competing in something like the World Games are not cheap. Many athletes have to spend a lot of money out of pocket to prepare for these games between coaching, travel, and participating in the games. Please consider donating to help Ryan's dream come true! https://www.justgiving.com/page/ryanchin?utm_term=JnDGprjAj
