The CDC is warning people not to eat certain fruit sold in the Hudson Valley.

The CDC is advising consumers in New York, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Rhode Island to not eat any whole, fresh papayas from Mexico due to a salmonella outbreak linked to the fruit.

Over 60 people in those eight states have gotten sick from eating fresh papayas from Mexico and 23 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC. No deaths have been reported.

Most people infected with Salmonella develop diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps 12 to 72 hours after being exposed to the bacteria. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

Consumers who have whole, fresh papayas imported from Mexico in their homes should not eat them. Throw the papayas away, even if some of them were eaten and no one has gotten sick, the CDC advises.

Do not eat fruit salads or other mixes that include papayas from Mexico. If you aren’t sure the papaya you bought is from Mexico, you can ask the place of purchase.
