New Speed Cameras to be Installed in Ulster County
Officials have announced plans to install ticket-issuing speed cameras in select school zones in the City of Kingston, NY.
Over the last year or so, the Hudson Valley has witnessed a huge jump in the number of speed cameras that have begun to show up on many of the roads we drive daily. Each of the cameras has the ability to issue tickets to speeding drivers and can be found monitoring select roads in Dutchess, Ulster, and Orange Counties.
Most of the camera locations are on major roads, including Route 9W, I-84, and more, but now it appears that speed cameras could begin to monitor roads in the City of Kingston, NY.
Speed Cameras Coming to Kingston, NY
According to Kingston Mayor Steve Noble, the city is expecting to install speed cameras in select school zones in the city by the start of the 2025-2026 school year. Noble laid out the city's plan to members of the city’s Police Commission at a recent meeting, stating that they have begun the bidding process and are conducting interviews with potential suppliers, according to the Daily Freeman.
How Will the Cameras Work?
Once the cameras are installed, they will only issue tickets to vehicles that are traveling more than 10 mph over the posted speed limit in a school zone during school hours (7 a.m. to 4 p.m.). Noble told the Freeman that outside of school hours, the city will not issue tickets, saying, "Outside of those hours, someone could go 85 mph and we couldn’t issue a ticket unless a police officer is there."

Each ticket issued by a speed camera will be sent to the registered vehicle owner and will come with a $50 fine.
Where Will Speed Cameras Be Located in Kingston, NY?
The city is expected to place the cameras in three high-traffic school zones, including around the George Washington Elementary School, the Kingston High School, and a yet-to-be-determined location.
Once Kingston turns the cameras on, it will join Syracuse and Albany as the only cities in New York, outside of New York City, to have a speed camera program, according to Mayor Noble.
