Kingston

Kingston is one of Ulster County's most beloved cities, resting on the edge of the Hudson River. It is rich with history, colorful with culture, and a growing hub for travelers to visit when passing through the Hudson Valley.

According to the City of Kingston, NY official page, Kingston's first residents were Native Americans of the Esopus tribe. In 1652, Kingston saw its first arrival of Dutch settlers. The stockade was the Dutch settlers' answer to the tensions that rose between Native Americans and the Dutch. It would become a dedicated district for the Dutch settlers to comfortably live. Kingston is also often remembered for being New York's first state capital in 1777. This decision followed the establishment of the first New York State Senate. Less than a year later, British forces traveled up to Kingston and burned down the capital, the village homes included.

Today, visitors come from all over to explore the history that Kingston holds. Beyond that, Kingston is home to many beloved small businesses, a diverse restaurant scene, and colorful art and culture. It has truly become a must-see stop on your Hudson Valley adventures.
