The Used are headlining the Rockstar Disrupt Tour this summer, and while new music has yet to surface from the group, that doesn't mean some fresh tracks aren't on the way.

During a chat with KCAL 96.7's RadioActive Mike Z., bassist Jeph Howard offered an update on the band's upcoming eighth studio album. “In a year we wrote 40 new songs with our new guitar player [Joey Bradford], scrapped ‘em all, then went into the studio and wrote 10 songs in 10 days," revealed Howard of their recording sessions so far.

"We were going to release two singles before this tour, but we decided to hold off and wait and not be so ambitious," the bassist continued. "We’re going back into the studio after this tour. We have a show in Indonesia, and then we're going straight in for another six weeks of recording and writing."

When asked if this pushes a new album to 2020, Howard responded, “I’m thinking maybe this year, but that’s shooting high. We were talking about touring starting in January, which is kind of rare. We usually start in February. But starting in that hot, I think that maybe after this tour we’ll release a song, maybe two songs, in a short amount of time.”

While the next album is still a work in progress, Howard confirms the two new tracks will be on the forthcoming release, adding, "They’re rockin'. I’m excited about this record.”

When asked about the direction of the music, the bassist stated that where The Canyon was a more experimental release for them, pushing the boundaries after a long sought after album experience with producer Ross Robinson, this next record will see them revisiting what made their early albums so great.

"That record was kind of a departure for The Used where we tried to go out there for some things. But this record, we’ve got another alignment going on. We’re trying to throw back to our roots a little bit more," said Howard. "[We want to] come back to that alignment of maybe first or second or third record and going a different direction off of that idea. So that’s what we’re shooting for. It’s going to be different, but not different in the way that our last record was. I don’t even want to say ‘heavy side.’ It’s going to be cool.”
