Before any of us could truly learn what was kept in the "Beyond" section, Bed Bath & Beyond announced that they plan on closing 37 of their store locations in 2022. New York is the state worst affected, with seven locations planning on shutting their doors for good by February. Even worse, two of those locations are here in the Hudson Valley.

The announcement didn't come as a surprise. Locally, the franchise has already closed several locations, including their Mohegan Lake store in Westchester county. They're also not the only large chain to make the decision to cut their brick and mortar numbers: Macy's recently announced store closings of their own this year.

So what gives? Well it's no secret that consumers have been turning more and more to online shopping, especially after COVID-19 punched us in the metaphorical face and cause the closings of countless businesses, both national and local. This also isn't a new move by the retailer, but rather a continuation of their July 2020 announcement to close 200 of their stores across the country.

I for one won't miss them terribly. I always felt overstimulated in there; how can one store sell towels, As Seen on TV pancake griddles AND drones? Maybe that was their last ditch effort in diversifying their portfolio to avoid the closings that are happening now. Either way, if you are a BB&B fan (I know I'm in the minority with my stance) check out the locations below in the Hudson Valley that will be permanently closing their doors.

Luckily, there's good news. Only two locations are closing in our area, with their Newburgh, Middletown, Poughkeepsie, and Kingston locations all currently staying open. Also, the nixed stores aren't in the MID-Hudson Valley. So who IS closing?
