Unemployment is down in New York State. However, every county in the Hudson Valley saw an increase in unemployment.

On Tuesday, the New York State Department of Labor today released preliminary local area unemployment rates for December 2019.

Across the state, from December 2018 to December 2019, New York's private sector employment count increased by 97,700.

But, unemployment numbers have gone up slightly across the Hudson Valley. Putnam, Greene, Dutchess, Sullivan and Orange counties increased the most, +0.4.

Below is how much the unemployment percentage increased in every Hudson Valley county.

Dutchess County: December 2019 - 3.6 to December 2018 - 3.2
Putnam County: December 2019 - 3.8 to December 2018 - 3.4
Orange County: December 2019 - 3.9 to December 2018 - 3.5
Rockland County: December 2019 - 3.5 to December 2018 - 3.3
Westchester County: December 2019 - 3.8 to December 2018 - 3. 5
Columbia County: December 2019 - 4.7 to December 2019 - 4.3
Greene County: December 2019 - 3.2 to December 2019 - 3.0
Sullivan County: December 2019 - 4.3 to December 2019 - 3.9

Rates are calculated using methods prescribed by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. The State’s area unemployment rates rely in part on the results of the Current Population Survey, which contacts approximately 3,100 households in New York State each month.
