Unsolved Murder: 14-Year-Old Samantha Humphrey From Schenectady
Over two years have past since 14-year-old Samantha Humphrey disappeared. Her father, Jeffery Humphrey, continues his relentless search for the person responsible for her death. Samantha’s body was discovered in the Mohawk River on February 22, 2023, three months after she was last seen. Despite the passage of time, Jeffery’s determination to secure justice for his daughter remains unwavering.
A Father’s Unyielding Efforts
“My daughter’s been dead for two years, spent three months in a river. My confidence couldn’t really be lower,” Jeffery Humphrey said. As the case remains unsolved, he took his efforts to the next level. While billboards previously raised awareness, he shifted to a more personal approach, distributing 200 lawn signs in Schenectady to keep the case in the public eye. The reward for information leading to an arrest had also been raised to $20,000.
The Search for Answers
Her father believes there is enough evidence to charge a former boyfriend but expressed frustration with the pace of the investigation. “A murder case doesn’t rest on an autopsy alone. It rests on the strength of the litigator and their ability to make an argument to a jury,” he stated. Despite Jeffery’s concerns, the Schenectady Police Department continues to insist that the investigation is active. .
Drone Search and Community Support
The New York State Police played a crucial role in the search. Using drones equipped with infrared technology, they scoured vast areas, from the Hudson River to Clifton Park. These drones were vital in covering hard-to-reach places and accelerating the search. “We can get an aircraft up and eliminate a lot of search areas,” said Garret Gainor, UAS Coordinator for the State Police. The drones made it possible to search areas that would have been impossible for foot teams to reach, such as steep cliffs and bodies of water.
The Call for Justice Continues
At a candlelight vigil marking the anniversary of Samantha’s disappearance, Jeffery expressed his grief and frustration. “We’re here to remember Sam and to bring attention to the lack of activity on the case,” he said. His ongoing efforts to spread awareness, from lawn signs to billboards, underscored his unwavering commitment to finding his daughter’s killer. Despite the challenges, Jeffery remains focused on his son and the slim but vital hope that one day, justice would be served. As the search continues, the Humphrey family’s fight for closure persists, with no arrests yet made.
