Officials released lots of more information regarding Wednesday’s deadly 6-vehicle crash on Interstate-84. Charges are pending.

According to State Police, Wednesday around 12:20 p.m., 4 vehicles, a 2016 White Hyundai Sante Fe, 2016 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, 2014 Mitsibushi Outlander, and a 2003 Sprinter Van towing a small utility trailer, were stopped in traffic in the left lane of Interstate 84 westbound near mile marker 28.

The right lane of 84 was closed due to an upcoming construction zone. A 5th vehicle, a 2010 Dodge Truck, was slowing down for the approaching stopped traffic when it was struck from behind by a 6th vehicle, a 2004 Freightliner Tractor Trailer.

The force of the 2004 Freightliner Tractor Trailer striking the Dodge Truck caused the Dodge, which was occupied by two adults, to flip over about four times. The Dodge came to a complete stop in the grassy center median.

The Tractor Trailer continued forward and hit the rear of the Sprinter Van, which was occupied by two adults. This crunched the van into the Mitsibushi, which was occupied by two adults and a nine year old male.

The impact caused the Mitsibushi to crumble underneath the 2016 Freightliner Tractor Trailer, driven by the sole occupant, and push the Tractor Trailer into the 2016 Hyundai Sante Fe, which was occupied by two adults.

The 3 people in the Mitsibusi and two adults in the Sprinter Van were trapped inside their crushed vehicles and had to be extracted out.

The passenger of the Sprinter Van, identified as 43-year-old Christopher Marks, of Chester was pronounced dead at the scene by Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The injured were taken to area hospitals including several that were flown to Westchester County by Medivac. There are reports of at least four MEDIVAC helicopters on the scene along with multiple local emergency responders and Orange County HazMat.

I-84 West was closed for until Wednesday evening near the accident with traffic being diverted off the highway at exit 5-A, (Stewart International Airport/HWY 747).

Wednesday’s crash is at almost the same spot as Monday’s crash that involved multiple cars and a tractor-trailer.

Both crashes occurred on I-84 where two lanes merge to one due to roadwork at a construction zone.

Police say the investigation is continuing with charges pending.
