The voice stopped me from typing mid-sentence. A musician's sound check isn't a frequent occurrence in the station, but it happens often enough that you learn how to keep going about your work as the engineers and managers and performers set up for a show in the WRRV Atrium.

Andrew McMahon is something special, though. The deft singer-songwriter known for his work in Something Corporate and Jack's Mannequin stopped by WRRV on Thursday to perform a five-song set in support of his new album, 'Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness.'

It was just McMahon, a piano and an audience 30 lucky fans for the intimate performance. A thoroughly engaged McMahon joked with the crowd and told the stories behind his intelligent, evocative lyrics during the set.

The stripped down rendition of 'Cecilia and the Satellite' is one of the most emotionally powerful songs about fatherhood you'll hear. (Simmer down. The video is coming. Soon -- we promise. It's here.)

After the performance, McMahon signed autographs and posed for photos with fans, who won entry into the show through an online contest. McMahon was generous with his time during the meet and greet -- and pretty damn funny. One couple, who were expecting a child, wanted a photo taken with their iPhone. They said they hadn't made an official social media announcement. This photo would be the first to confirm the pregnancy on their Facebook accounts.

"We've got to stage this then," McMahon said, not missing a beat.

McMahon directed the scene as he and the father pointed at the mother's baby bump in mock surprise.

And then the satellite was out the door, bound for the next leg of his U.S. tour.
