Stone Temple Pilots promptly squashed the rumor that Creed singer Scott Stapp will be their new frontman. Turns out the band Stapp hinted that he'd joined is actually Art of Anarchy – the modern rock supergroup previously fronted by the late Scott Weiland.

The rumor mill kicked in yesterday when Stapp said during a 13-minute interview on Atlanta radio show Bailey and Southside (via Alternative Nation). Stapp said, "I’ve been working on a new album with a new group of guys,” Stapp said. “Guys from some pretty well-known rock bands that you guys will know.”

When directly asked if it was STP, Stapp said he could neither confirm nor deny it. He did, however, also say, "There is a six-degree separation connection between this new project and the band you mentioned.”

Stone Temple Pilots have been conducting an expansive search for a new lead singer after the departure of Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington and the death of original frontman Weiland. They accepted submissions from all corners of the world and held auditions. But the band countered Stapp's claims with a pointed tweet.

Meanwhile, Blabbermouth reported that Stapp is actually taking over Art of Anarchy – the supergroup Weiland was in with Disturbed bassist John Moyer and former Guns n' Roses guitarist Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal.

And it's also worth noting that Stapp also toured in the same bus Scott Weiland was found dead on last year.
