Selfie sticks are annoying, sure. But did you know you could be putting your life at risk? The more you know...

It sounds absurd, but it's apparently true. There have been eight shark attack deaths so far this year.

How many have died via selfie? Twelve.

Yup, 50% more people have died from selfies than from sharks.

According to Mashable:

Four of the selfie deaths this year, like the tourist, identified as Hideto Ueda, were caused by falling.

The next leading cause of deaths involving selfies was being hit or injured by trains, either because the individual was taking trying to get a photo with a train or because the photo they wanted involved getting on dangerous equipment.

Look, I understand the rush of doing numbers on Instagram and Facebook. You've finally been accepted by your friends and declared interesting! That girl in your driver's ed class from ten years ago that you have never actually spoken to but you dream about on a nightly basis finally acknowledged your existence and thinks you're super rad because you took a selfie of yourself running with the bulls in Pamplona. It's awesome!

It's not worth dying for. Chill with the selfies. And if you're within a mile and a half of me, chill with the selfie sticks in general. Thanks in advance.
