Following an investigation into heroin sales in the Hudson Valley, an alleged dealer was arrested after he tried to flee police.

On July 20, members of the Ulster Regional Gang Enforcement Narcotics Team, URGENT, arrested 37-year-old Peter A. Wenzel of Poughkeepsie following an investigation into heroin sales in the Town of Esopus and surrounding areas.

Wenzel was found by members of URGENT and the City of Poughkeepsie Police Department Narcotics Unit around 7:45 p.m., hiding on a fire escape balcony when police were searching for him at an apartment complex in Poughkeepsie, police say.

He allegedly attempted to break into a nearby apartment to escape from police but was quickly taken into custody.

During his arrest, he was found in possession of a quantity of heroin and fentanyl, according to the Ulster County Sheriff's Office.

Wenzel was charged with criminal sale of a controlled substance and criminal possession of a controlled substance. More charges are pending, police say.

Wenzel was arraigned in the Town of Marbletown Justice Court and remanded to the Ulster County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail or $50,000 secured bond.
