I knew it got cold in New York... but I had no idea we actually had "arctic zones" in the state.

While we are still months away from winter in the Hudson Valley, temperatures are already dropping. A bit further north, things are getting even more extreme.

"Arctic" Weather in New York State

It might only be October, but parts of New York have already seen their first snowfall of the year. While some areas like Whiteface Mountain are famous for inclement weather, I never thought it'd be extreme enough to be considered "arctic". I was wrong.

Arctic-Alpine Plant Zones in New York

In upstate New York, especially high in the Adirondack mountains, climates change quickly. That means that only wildlife and plants that are able to withstand the toughest conditions can survive. Welcome to the Artic-Alpine Plant Zone.

Alpine Zones in the Adirondack Mountains

These alpine zones are found on New York mountains above tree level, where only the hardiest plants can survive. From ADK.org:

New York’s alpine zone is a dangerous, gripping, and magnificent place. Ripping wind, slippery ice, and snow that could come up to your boots in one section of trail and up to your waist in another.

Plants in the alpine zone can experience frost for 300 days of every year, and even though they can withstand most of the extreme natural elements, they are still susceptible to damage from people.
