Chester Preschool Shut Down Due to Child Safety Concerns
Little Scholars Preschool in Chester has been shut down by the state following alarming reports of a 3-year-old child found alone and wandering outside the facility.
The state Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) suspended the preschool’s license after an inspection on September 10 revealed multiple violations, including "incompetent supervision." The closure affects over 80 children and more than 30 employees.
Details of the Incident
According to sources, the child ran off from their group while returning from the playground and was discovered by a stranger outside the facility.
The absence reportedly went unnoticed for an unknown period. This incident raises serious concerns, especially given the preschool’s proximity to busy Route 17M and a parking lot filled with traffic. “It can be dangerous...people don’t stop,” remarked Christine Diaz, a nearby worker.
Community Reactions
Staff members expressed their distress over the situation, emphasizing the dedication of the facility’s founder, who started the preschool out of a passion for early childhood education.
Assistant teacher Alexander Adam stated, “It’s very upsetting,” as parents were seen collecting their children’s belongings following the abrupt closure.
Next Steps for the Facility
The OCFS records indicate that the facility faces four violations and has been deemed a risk to child safety, classified as being in "imminent danger." Little Scholars Preschool will remain closed until the cited issues are resolved, and there is potential for revocation of its operating license.
News 12 is awaiting further comment from OCFS for more details on the case.
