On the morning of Jan. 9, 2014 a pedestrian crossing Walsh Ave. in New Windsor was was struck and killed. His body found later in a nearby creek after his family reported he had not shown up for work.

Orange County District Attorney David M. Hoovler announced on Wednesday that 31-year-old Linda Ibrahim, who had earlier pleaded guilty to second degree vehicular manslaughter, had been sentenced to prison for hitting the man while intoxicated. She was originally arrested on Jan. 16 after an investigation by the Town of New Windsor Police Department.

Ibrahim was sentenced to serve between two and six years in state prison after not reporting the crash at the time it happened. The District Attorney's Office had suggested she serve between two and one third and seven years in prison, which was the maximum allowed under the law.

"This sentence ensures that the defendant will finally be made to face the consequences of her actions," Hoovler said. "Hopefully she will learn to accept responsibility for her actions and feel actual remorse for her actions as she serves her state prison sentence."

Hoovler said for the family of the victim, "While no sentence can ever compensate for the loss of a loved one, I hope that the imposition of this prison sentence brings some sense of closure to the victim's family, who had to wait while complicated issues were litigated both in Orange County Court and in the Appellate Division."

Looking at the length of the jail term determined by the judge, he added, "This defendant's conduct in driving while intoxicated and then not reporting she had struck the victim with her car, deprived them of any hope of rescue and is deserving of a state prison sentence."

Commending the Town of New Windsor Police Department for their work in the investigation, Hoovler also gave credit to Chief Assistant District Attorney Christopher Borek and Assistant District Attorney Robert Middlemiss who prosecuted the case.
