Earlier this week, Newburgh residents were caught off guard when it was announced that one of their favorite summertime destinations would be closing for good. As it turns out, that's only the beginning of the story.
Newburgh's only Dairy Queen, located at the intersection of Route 300 and 52, had been in business for nearly 70 years, with the current owner overseeing the last 50. Plans for his retirement have spurred a flurry of activity.

Popeyes Location Set to Replace Dairy Queen in Newburgh, NY
According to Newburgh Planning Board meetings, the existing Dairy Queen building will be demolished, and a new structure will be constructed further back from the road. There are also plans for the town to do some construction of their own.

New plans state that a Popeyes franchise location will be built on the former Dairy Queen property. In addition to the building being constructed further back from the busy intersection, a new turning lane may be added to help heavy traffic flows.
Details include a new 2,537-foot structure, 23 parking spaces, and new entrance and exit points for both route 52 and route 300. The new building will also be connected to town sewer and water systems.
