DEC Warns Hudson Valley Residents About Radioactive Dirt

The New York Department of Environmental Conservation has issued a warning to Hudson Valley residents about using free fill.

The Mount Vernon Daily Voice has reported that the DEC is warning local residents about free fill they could potentially be using. The DEC found radioactive waste next to fill near Niagara Falls in Buffalo. While the levels are low, it is enough for the warning to be issued.

The DEC warns local residents to be very cautious of the free fill they use for their land or property. The fill should be natural soil, sand, gravel, or rock with no non-soil constituents and have no petroleum or odor. According to The Mount Vernon Daily Voice, any fill should have zero regulated wastes like concrete, brick, asphalt, asbestos, drywall, plaster, roofing materials, wood, metal, and other contaminants.

The article also says that homeowners should request information regarding from the fill from the supplier.
