The weather has been changing a lot lately over the past few years and it's now not uncommon to experience extreme weather in New York. Just this past year alone we've had a lot of flooding, hurricane warnings, a few tornados, experienced powerful storms that have destroyed areas and don't forget about that earthquake. Nothing is off limits anymore and any kind of extreme weather is fair game now in New York.

This means people need to be more prepared because the financial costs for any kind of storm damage can be huge and unexpected for homeowners. Sadly, it doesn't seem that people are as prepared and taking the precautions that you think they would.

How prepared are people for extreme weather?

According to a new survey, 1 in 4 homeowners feel that they are financially unprepared for extreme weather events. Even more details show that reportedly only 14% say they are somewhat prepared for this and 12% say they are very unprepared.  More stats show that 2 out 5 homeowners have not done anything within the last 5 years to protect their property against extreme weather damage.

However, here's the breakdown of areas that have taken some steps to help if there is extreme weather damage. Here's the regional breakdown of homeowners that have increased their insurance and purchased additional coverage:

  • Northeastern homeowners: 17%
  • Southern homeowners: 13%
  • Midwestern homeowners: 8%
  • Western homeowners: 14%

Northeastern homeowners do have the higher precent, but overall the numbers could be higher and more can be done to help.

It's important to take a moment and really think of all you can do to protect yourself, your family and your home. You really never know what can happen and being extra prepared will never hurt you.
