When it rains, it pours (or when it snows, it storms?), and this month, that means more and more towns, villages, and cities across the Hudson Valley are announcing free holiday parking in the month of December.

In what has become a welcome tradition in many municipalities (looking at you, Saugerties), many local governments seem to be hopping on the "free" train, and this year, some areas are doing it earlier than ever.

Free Holiday Parking in the Hudson Valley

Like clockwork, the village of Saugerties as well as the city of Hudson are the first to announce their free parking initiatives, which began on December 1st. "Not only is SAUGERTIES a great spot for your holiday shopping, it now offers FREE PARKING in the Village while you shop or grab a bite to eat", the Saugerties Chamber of Commerce announced on Facebook (below). Their neighbor to the south recently made an announcement, too.

Free Holiday Parking in Kingston, NY

Last year, the city of Kingston, NY made their free parking announcement on December 14th, giving both residents and visitors roughly two weeks of meter-free enjoyment. This year, the announcement not only came sooner, but it had better news as well, with the city sharing that free holiday parking would begin nine days earlier, on December 5th (below).

The city announced that time usually spent checking meters will be devoted to necessary maintenance and repairs, and reminded residents that parking permits for 2026 are currently available on the city's website.

While some Hudson Valley towns are known for their free parking, others are famous for the opposite. New Paltz, for example, raised their meter rates in 2022, and only offer free parking on select days. This holiday season, parking is free in the village of New Paltz on December 24th, 25th, 26th, 31st, and January 1st.
