First Hudson Valley Towns to Kick off Free Holiday Parking

There are plenty of ways to commemorate the beginning of the holiday season in the Hudson Valley. While many homes are decorated as soon as Halloween is over, some more patient residents wait until after carving Thanksgiving turkey... There's one annual event, however, that should be indisputable proof that our region is ready to get holly and jolly: the return of free holiday parking.

Parking in general can be a sore subject for several Hudson Valley towns (many New Paltz residents are still talking about the parking price hikes from 2022). It should come as no surprise, then, that even a brief respite from feeding the meter is viewed as a cause for celebration.

Free Holiday Parking Returns to the Hudson Valley

Like clockwork, the Village of Saugerties, NY in Ulster County has made the first announcement of the season, sharing that for the entire month of December, parking will be free at metered spaces for up to two hours (below). Luckily, they won't be alone.

Which Hudson Valley Towns Offer Free Holiday Parking?

Among the comments thanking the village for their annual commitment to gratis street parking came the other, snarkier comments wishing the same for other towns. The most common target was a city just a short drive south from Saugerties on the New York State Thruway.

Free Holiday Parking in Kingston, NY

"Hey Kingston, ya paying attention?", asked one sarcastic commenter. "Take note Kingston", wrote another. While Kingston does not offer free parking for the month of December, the city has offered free parking in the past. While no official announcement has been made yet, Kingston offered free holiday parking in 2024 beginning on December 14th and running through January 1st.

In addition to Saugerties and Kingston, several other Hudson Valley towns, villages, and cities also offer free parking in honor of the holidays, including the City of Hudson, which offers free holiday parking for the entire month of December.
