A Hudson Valley man was fatally hit by a car while trying to cross the New York State Thruway in the Hudson Valley, closing down the highway for hours.

On Tuesday around 10:45 p.m., New York State Police responded to reports of serious injury accident which involved a vehicle striking a pedestrian on I-87 northbound in the town of Clarkstown.

A preliminary investigation revealed Nicholas J. Polao's car was involved in a property damage accident at the location and was disabled on the left shoulder.

While responding to the scene, troopers were told the 29-year-old from Cortlandt Manor was hit by a BMW while trying to cross I-87, police say. Polao was taken to Westchester Medical Center with serious injuries, where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the BMW, 53-year-old Zarita M. Holness of Washingtonville, wasn't injured and showed no signs of impairment, police say. No charges have been filed at this time.
