Hudson Valley Man Named 'Soda Pop' Charged With Attempted Murder

A Hudson Valley man with the nickname "Soda Pop" has been indicted on attempted murder charges for allegedly shooting and seriously injuring a Newburgh man.

On Monday in Orange County Court, 23-year-old Ryan Discua aka "Soda Pop" was arraigned on an indictment charging him attempted murder, and two counts of criminal possession of a weapon, in connection with the shooting of a man in the City of Newburgh.

The attempted murder was alleged to have occurred on Oct. 9, around 11 a.m., in the vicinity of 129 William Street. The man who was shot suffered serious physical injury, officials say.

Discua was charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon for having an illegally possessed a semiautomatic pistol during a shootout with another individual on Oct. 6, near 264 First Street, in the City of Newburgh, and and for possessing a loaded 9mm pistol when he was arrested by the City of Newburgh Police Department on Oct. 10, officials say.

“City of Newburgh residents deserve to be free from wanton gunplay on the streets where they live, work and raise their families,” Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler said. “I thank the City of Newburgh Police Department, the New York State Police and the Town of New Windsor Police for their actions on this case and their untiring efforts to prevent additional violence.

Discua faces 25 years in prison on the charge of attempted murder. Bail was set in the amount of $500,000 cash or $1,000,000 bond.
