Extreme Cold Watch in New York

The National Weather Service has issued an "Extreme Cold Watch" for most of the Hudson Valley region. It goes into effect Saturday morning (Feb. 7th) until 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 8th) and could result in dangerously low temperatures, including wind chills that could reach 30 degrees below zero. Temperatures that low can trigger frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes, so if you're planning to do anything outside, be sure to bundle up, dress in layers, wear a hat, scarf, face mask, and gloves.

Home Heating Hazards

If you are planning to add some extra heat at home this winter by using a space heater, fireplace, or other heat source, remember that they can quickly become dangerous if not used properly. New York fire officials have shared a few simple steps to prevent a catastrophic event.

The President of the Albany Permanent Professional Firefighters Association, Robert Mengel told WTEN, "A common call we respond to in Albany is, you know, people using heating sources in their apartments and houses inappropriately, like people using their ovens to heat things."

Using an oven to heat a home is extremely dangerous and could result in carbon monoxide poisoning, fires, and severe burns.

Space Heaters Can Be Dangerous

Space heaters are also a common item people use to try to warm their homes, but they can also be extremely dangerous. "People plug them into small extension cords that eventually get there, drawing too much energy and too much power for the capabilities of the extension cords. So, those will super heat and basically burn up and catch things around it on fire," said Mengel.

If you plan to use a space heater, officials recommend keeping it at least three feet away from anything flammable.

Homes that have fireplaces can also be a danger, especially if they haven’t been used or inspected in a while. Officials recommend having the chimney and flue cleaned and inspected every year.
