Massive New York Based Retailer Closing Five Stores

One of the biggest names in department stores has announced its plans to lay off approximately 3.5% of its workforce and shut down five locations across the country as it continues to try and adjust to customer shopping habits and trends.

Macy's Closing Stores in 2024

Macy's, founded in New York in 1858 is one of the most popular department stores in the country but the last ten years have been a struggle as they had to close nearly 300 stores according to Apple Valley News. The closing trend seems to be continuing in the new year as Macy's told CNN that the company is planning to lay off over 2,300 employees and close at least 5 more locations in 2024,

"As we prepare to deploy a new strategy to meet the needs of an ever-changing consumer and marketplace, we made the difficult decision to reduce our workforce by 3.5% to become a more streamlined company."

 

What Macy's Stores Are Closing?

Founded in New York back in 1858, Macy's is one of the most popular names in department stores in the country. Currently, they have over 500 locations scattered across the country with 33 stores in New York alone according to their website. Unfortunately, that number will shrink in the next few months as they are planning to close five locations including stores in Arlington, Virginia, San Leandro, & Simi Valley, California, Lihue, Hawaii and Tallahassee, Florida. Macy's didn't share the reasons why these specific stores have been singled out to be closed but did say that they will begin closing in early 2024.

Are Any New York Macy's Stores Closing?

Thankfully, all New York stores are safe for now including the Macy's locations in Poughkeepsie and Middletown, New York but that could change as the company continues to attempt to turn around its slide in popularity.
